A testament to the history of both Nantes and Brittany, the Château of the Dukes of Brittany represents an exceptional heritage site right in the centre of the town. Classified as a historical monument since 1862, the fortress surrounds a 15th century ducal residence of Renaissance inspiration (the work of Duke François II and his daughter, Anne of Brittany).

A past, a history

The Château of the Dukes of Brittany-Nantes was built in the 15th century in order to succeed the ducal château that had been built two centuries earlier along the Gallo-Roman Wall. Classified as a historical monument, the fortress and palace bear testimony to both its past and its architectural wealth. It was originally designed to be a military fortress for defence, and it is located in the heart of the town.

A museum of urban history

At the forefront of contemporary museum design, equipped with multimedia systems, the History Museum of Nantes presents over 850 objects in its collection: from a "portrait of the town" dating from the origins of the ducal city up to the present day.

From the main entrance over the fixed bridge, shining from inside just next to the curtain walls, is a warm orange-tinted light which gives the impression that Anne of Brittany’s home is still lived in.
