Doué-la-Fontaine zoo

Situated in the Loire Valley, close to Saumur, the BIOPARC ZOO DE DOUE forms a maze of rock and wild, lush vegetation. Strongly committed to the preservation of threatened species in their natural habitat, the zoo has a remarkable collection of animals. The strangeness of this troglodytic site (former sand quarries, caves and high-ceiling caverns) and the way the animals are presented makes this zoo one of the most beautiful in Europe. Don’t miss the 2-hectare black-rhinoceros valley dug out of rock, the leopard canyon, the vulture scramble, the giraffe camp, panoramic restaurant, ethnic boutique... New since 2009: the largest collection of South-American birds in Europe, in a one-hectare aviary.

Louis de Grenelles cellars

At the heart of the Loire valley, the Louis de Grenelle estate makes fine sparkling wines: Saumur rosé, Saumur brut and Crémant de Loire. Founded in 1859, it is today the only remaining independent family estate producing Saumur brut. Located 12 metres underneath the town of Saumur, Louis de Grenelle’s cellars, produce, in the purest tradition, Crémant de Loire and Saumur brut. You will discover in this former tufa quarry (dug out in the 15th century then converted into a cellar to age wines) the secrets of the traditional wine-making method using ancestral know-how. Enjoy the tales of wine making, its history and vine culture... Visit the recreational area where you can learn about the vine and wine, suitable for young and old alike... To be consumed in moderation!

Montsoreau, the small town with character

Between the Loire and the hillside, you will appreciate this old town and its romantic château, where fortress and manor-house gracefully join together. Made famous by Alexandre Dumas and situated right at the confluence of the Loire and the Vienne (at the heart of the Loire-Anjou-Touraine regional nature reserve), Montsoreau has always been a major stopping place for river traffic. When exploring the town centre, you will notice a number of troglodyte dwellings, old mariners’ houses, windmills, the Sénéchaussée palace, its churches, and the Fontaine well. Visits on foot, on horseback or by bike will take you around the village, vineyards and along the riverbanks.
